My Story
Zella Rivers is a nurse, professor, and survivor of narcissistic abuse. For years, she helped others navigate trauma and healing in her professional life while enduring it in her personal life.
Her book, I Should Have Left Then, chronicles her relationship with a physician whose charm masked cruelty, and whose control extended into every corner of her existence—from her home to the hospital where they both worked.
With courage and clarity, she shares her story not as a victim, but as a survivor determined to help others recognize the signs of abuse before it’s too late.
Zella continues to work in healthcare, advocate for survivors, and speak openly about the realities of emotional abuse.
Why I Wrote this Book?
“I stayed for too long. I made excuses. I convinced myself it wasn’t that bad. I told myself I was strong enough to handle it—until the day I realized that staying was the thing destroying me.
Writing this book wasn’t about revenge. It wasn’t even about him. It was about the woman I used to be, the woman I lost, and the woman I’m becoming. It’s about recognizing that abuse doesn’t always look like what we’ve been taught to expect.
If you’ve ever questioned your reality, doubted your worth, or wondered why you can’t just leave—this book is for you. You’re not alone. You’re not crazy. And you deserve better.” – Zella Rivers
